Saying that his object in coming to see Forster "is to be beguiled for a little into forgetfulness" [following the death of his daughter Edith]; saying that Lady Tennent is externally "calm and tranquil" but heart-broken; noting that his daughter died "suffering but uncomplaining"; commenting on two "pleasant letters" he received from Lord Stanley and Lord Derby that praise his administration of the colony in Ceylon.

John Forster was born and raised in Newcastle by Unitarian parents, and educated at Cambridge and London's Inner Temple. He became an important literary critic and editor, and wrote numerous books of his own, notably several biographies. Forster's greatest contribution may have been as literary adviser and advocate for some of the key authors of his day, including Tennyson, Browning, Dickens, and Carlyle.
